Prior to S. Rajaratnam's passing, the only knowledge I had of him was derived from my history textbooks, as I think was (and still is) the case for many other third and fourth-generation Singaporeans. When he quit the political scene 2 decades ago, many of us were still too young to understand the ways of the world. Only recently did I read more about him, this pioneer of Singapore, and how he worked tirelessly like a craftsman to mould and shape our modern day Singapore.

I didn't even know it was he who wrote our national pledge!

Yes sir, you will be sorely missed.
